Lopez Island Fire and EMS crews Mopping up after a 1/2-acre wildland fire

On Saturday May 23rd  10:43 am, Lopez Island Fire and EMS responded to a wildland fire in the 1300 block of Port Stanley road. On arrival, the first in crew found a wind driven fire, in the brush and driftwood along the beach, moving rapidly towards neighboring homes. The first arriving engine pulled wildland hose and began wetting around the fire to slow spread. Crews then established a water tender shuttle while others started digging out the logs for extinguishment.. After extinguishing the fire, crews looked for hot spots to lessen the chance of the wind fanning embers and starting the fire again.

As is the case with most wildland fires in the San Juan Islands, this was a human caused fire that started from an unattended burn pile that was assumed to be out.

No structures were involved in this fire and there were no injuries to bystanders or firefighters.
